Nobunari Oda (JPN) takes Men's Short Program
Nobunari Oda of Japan took the Men's Short Program with Canada's Kevin Reynolds and Adam Rippon (USA) following in second and third.
Oda's precise routine to “Storm” by the Yoshida Brothers featured a solid triple Axel, a triple flip-triple toe, a triple Lutz and level-four spins. He received 81.37 points. “I was nervous to skate last, but I did a good job with my jumps and spins, and so I'm very satisfied with today's performance”, Oda commented.
Reynolds hit a quadruple Salchow-triple toe combination and a quadruple toeloop to become the first skater to land two quadruple jumps in the Short Program. The option to include two quadruple jumps in the Short Program only exists since this season. The Canadian scored 80.09 points. “I was thrilled to land both (quads) the first time I've tried them in a major competition”, Reynolds said. “I didn't get level fours on everything, so I think I can improve on that. But I think it was a great start.”
Performing to Tchaikovski's “Romeo and Juliet Overture”, Rippon produced a triple Axel, triple flip-triple toe and his trademark triple Lutz with both arms over his head. The reigning Four Continents Champion earned 77.53 points. “It's my first time showing my short program in competition, and I'm really happy with the performance I gave. There are definitely a lot of things that I can improve with the overall performance of the program, the spins and the footwork, but I think it's a great way to start the season”, the two-time World Champion told the press.
World silver medalist Patrick Chan (CAN) missed his quadruple toeloop, triple Axel and fell in th footwork to finish fourth (73.20 points).
